Engineered beams, point loads and tall walls. Anything where the drawing carries a stamp gets built to the detail, not an interpretation of it.
When an engineer puts a stamp on a drawing they are taking responsibility for a specific arrangement of members, connections and load paths. Build something close to it and that responsibility quietly transfers to whoever changed it. That is a bad position for a builder, and it is a worse one for a framer.
So engineered work gets built to the detail as drawn. Beam sizes, hanger types, fastener schedules, bearing and the full load path down to the footing. If something on the drawing genuinely cannot be built as shown, we stop and raise it with the engineer rather than solving it in the field and hoping nobody opens the wall later.
We stop and raise it. Field conditions do sometimes conflict with a drawing, and the right answer is a conversation with the engineer rather than a decision made by whoever is holding the nail gun that morning. It is a short delay against a real risk.
Yes, the specified hardware with the specified fasteners. Substituting a similar looking connector or the wrong nail changes the rated capacity of the connection, and it is one of the more common things flagged during a framing inspection, at which point the fix means going back into work that is already built.
Yes. Tall walls need bracing, stud sizing and sometimes intermediate blocking that a standard height wall does not, and they behave differently during construction before the structure is tied together. They get planned rather than treated as a taller version of a normal wall.
When it helps, yes. Most of the time the drawings answer the question. When they do not, going straight to the engineer is faster and safer than routing an interpretation through three people and hoping the meaning survives the trip intact.
